Why Should I Read the Bible Regularly If I Don’t Always Understand It?
Question (submitted anonymously)
“I know I should read the Bible, but a lot of the time I don’t fully understand what I’m reading. Sometimes it feels repetitive or confusing. Why is regular Bible reading so important if I don’t always ‘get it’?”
Answer
This is a common and honest struggle for many believers. Scripture was not given merely to be analyzed, but to be lived out over time. Understanding often grows gradually, through repeated exposure and faithful reading, rather than all at once.
The Bible describes itself as spiritual nourishment. Just as food strengthens the body even when we don’t understand the science behind it, God’s Word strengthens the soul as we consistently take it in. Regular reading shapes our thinking, anchors our faith, and keeps us rooted in truth, even when full comprehension comes later.
Biblical Perspective
Scripture emphasizes the formative power of God’s Word.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Paul reminds Timothy that Scripture equips believers for every good work:
2 Timothy 3:16–17
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…”
Understanding grows as we remain faithful in the practice.
Practical Encouragement
Instead of measuring Bible reading by how much you understand, consider measuring it by faithfulness. Over time, passages that once seemed confusing begin to make sense as Scripture interprets Scripture. Reading in community, asking questions, and returning to the same passages repeatedly all contribute to deeper understanding.
God honors a heart that desires to know Him, even when clarity comes slowly.
Closing Thought
Regular time in God’s Word is not about mastering information, but about being shaped by truth. Even when understanding feels incomplete, the Lord is using His Word to grow, guide, and strengthen His people.
