Bible Study Books to get a good start
Recently, I had a woman call the Pastoral Care Line and request a list of Bible study books for a new believer, or just a believer who wants to get serious about studying the Scripture. The same day I had a conversation with a man who was struggling with some issues even though he had been a believer for some time. As we talked, it became apparent to me that he wasn’t spending time studying the scripture. He was attending church regularly, listening to our pastor’s verse-by-verse exposition of Scripture during the weekend service, and occasionally attending the midweek service, where our pastor really digs into the Word. But, he wasn’t pursuing his own study of the Scripture.
Not regularly studying the word on your own on a daily basis is like only bathing on the weekend. Jesus said, “Already you are made clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.” John 15:3 David understood that the word is a defense against sin, when he declared, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you,” Psalm 119:11. Honestly, at some point we need to climb out of the high chair, and start feeding ourselves from God’s word, allowing the Holy Spirit to teach us how to walk as an adult Christian.
I’ve selected twenty-two books by conservative Christian theologians who believe in the inerrancy of Scripture, the deity of Christ, and hold to sound doctrinal teachings. Like every scribe trained for the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 13:52), I’ve brought out some things old and something new for you to feast on.
